February 27, 2008 Wednesday Hello friends, I am updating you all on my progress at last. I'm sorry that it has taken me awhile to talk with you all. I wanted to wait until I was actually speaking as myself and not from the pain medication's point of view. The surgery was 10 days ago. It had been scheduled to start at 7 A.M. but Maria made me take an Altoid. That ended up delaying the surgery for a few hours. Who would of thought one Altoid could cause so much trouble, they MUST be curiously strong!!! The surgery did end up taking longer then expected because of the severity of the disc problem. It turns out that the disc had been sitting on that spinal vertebral nerve long enough to have adhered to it. This means that normally extricating a piece of disc would mean it is simply removed. In my case the disc had to be slowly and carefully cut away, tiny piece by tiny piece, so as not to cause permanent injury to the nerve. Thanks to a great and thorough surgeon and colleague DR. Sanford Wright, the surgery seems to be completely successful. Time of course will be the judge, but I am alive, talking, and very occasionally walking. I will go to my first follow up appointment tomorrow, Thursday Feb 28th. I will let you all know how that goes. I am confined to bed and home for the first 2 weeks following the surgery and have been pretty good about following orders. I have to admit, cabin fever has forced me out of the house twice. BUT SERIOUSLY YOU START TO GO CRAZY!!! The weather has been so nice it's killing me not to work in my over grown yard. Time off and I can't even ride my mower!!! All in all I am feeling very confident that I should be back to work sooner than later. I'm really hoping for a return to the clinic end of March beginning of April. I'll let you know if my surgeon agrees. Either way, as soon as I can, I will start popping in to visit you all there at SRC. Yesterday was the worst day as far as pain goes but, I'm decreasing pain medication dosage, so I guess that is to be expected. On the bright side all of my leg pain is completely gone. I also look very similar to the Sonics furry mascot as a razor has not neared my face since before the surgery. I really miss you all, my clinic and helping you all because I really do love my profession. Hope all is well in your worlds. Email me if you want or need to. I have been bad about checking it up to now, but I vow to check it daily. Speak at you all soon. DR. J. |
